General FAQs about High Holidays at JLA

What kind of service is this? What should I expect?

Our services blend tradition with modernity. We include core elements of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur like shofar blowing, key prayers, and familiar melodies, while keeping the environment warm, welcoming, and family-friendly. The tone is spiritual, musical, and interpretive, rather than strictly traditional.

Are the services appropriate for someone new to Jewish practice or observance?

Absolutely! Whether you’ve attended High Holiday services your whole life or this is your first time, we aim to make everyone feel at home. Hebrew and English are both used, and explanations are offered throughout to provide context.

Are these services just for families with young kids?

Not necessarily. While the format is designed with children and families in mind, we find that adults of all ages appreciate the inclusive, meaningful, and musical experience. There's something for everyone.

Please note that child care is not provided as part of these services. Children are expected to be supervised by their adult/guardian at all times.

How do the High Holiday ticket types work?

Family Passes are designed for families attending with children and include everyone in your family, with no limit on the number of kids. Individual Passes are for adults attending on their own, including our 20s and 30s community. Children do not need individual tickets when attending with a family.

Our services are designed for children to participate alongside a parent or adult caregiver, and we do not offer childcare. Children are therefore included in Family Passes rather than sold individual tickets.

How long is the service?

Each service is about two hours total: one hour of communal prayer, followed by one hour of optional, interactive activities and community gathering.

Do I need tickets or can I just show up?

Tickets are required and available online. Advance registration helps us prepare the right space and materials for everyone attending.

What should I wear?

Dress is comfortable and respectful. Some attendees dress in holiday clothes; others come more casually. Come as you are.

Is there assigned seating?

No, seating is open. If you need additional accommodations or accessible seating, please let us know in advance.

Will there be food?

Light refreshments may be offered after Rosh Hashanah and Neilah services. Details will be shared closer to the event.

Will someone be taking photos?

Please note photography and videography will take place at all of the events listed above. J Los Angeles may photograph or record any class or event for marketing and communications purposes. By registering, you consent to the use of your image. If you do not want to appear in photos or videos used in JLA marketing efforts, including but not limited to social media, print or other digitally distributed materials, and this website, please let us know by sending an email to marketing@thejla.org that includes the full name and a current photo of each individual opting out. This opt-out must be renewed annually.
