What is Amilia?
Amilia, or SmartRec by Amilia, is the system we now use for registration, payments, and check in going forward. It replaces the software we used before such as iClass, Eventbrite, . You will use it to sign up for classes and programs, manage your household's account, keep your payment details current, and check in when you arrive.
Check out our brief tutorial video:
You can use the system from any web browser at amilia.com or from the Amilia app on your phone. Both do the same things, though a couple of tasks are easier on a browser and we have flagged those below.
Amilia is used by community centers, camps, and recreation organizations across North America, so if it looks familiar from another program your family attends, that is why.

Look out for this name
notifications@amilia.com
Your invitation comes from Amilia rather than from us, so the sender will not say J Los Angeles. That is expected. If an email about your JLA membership arrives from anywhere else and asks for payment details, please do not click it. Forward it to amilia@thejla.org and we will take a look.
Please wait for your invitation before creating an account
You will get an email from notifications@amilia.com with a link to set up your login. Creating your own account at amilia.com instead makes a duplicate that we cannot merge on our end, only Amilia can, and it takes a while to untangle. If you have already done this, email amilia@thejla.org and we will sort it out.
One invitation goes to each household, not to each person. Whoever receives it becomes the account owner and needs to set the account up first. Everyone else in the family joins afterwards, by invitation from inside the account. If yours has landed with the person least likely to get round to it, email us before anyone starts and we will move it. That is much easier than untangling a second account later.
Setting up your account
Four steps, about five minutes. Each one links to Amilia's own guide if you would like pictures.
1
The account owner creates the account
Click Create Your Account in the email from notifications@amilia.com, and check your spam folder if it has not arrived. Use the same email address we have on file, or your account will not connect to your membership. Only the account owner can do this step, so if that is not you, the invitation holder needs to go first.
Amilia's guide to setting up your account2
Add a payment method and authorize J Los Angeles
Go to Wallet, add your card or bank account, then select J Los Angeles under Authorizations. That second part is easy to miss and it is the one that matters.
Amilia's guide to managing your Wallet3
Add your household
Under People, choose a family member and click Invite to join family account. They will then be able to log in with their own email. This has to be done on a browser rather than the app.

Download the app
Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app is best used to check in, modify or cancel your registrations for classes, and pull up your membership card.
Amilia's guide to the mobile appIf you add a card but do not select J Los Angeles under Authorizations, we cannot see it. Your membership will not renew automatically and you will be asked for your card every time you register for something. It is one extra click. If you are not sure whether yours is set correctly, email us and we will check for you.

Common questions
If yours is not here, email amilia@thejla.org and we will add it.
I am not comfortable doing this online. Can someone help me?
Yes, and we are happy to help in person! Front desk staff can walk you through the process, and we will also be offering a schedule of
dedicated open training times in September when membership staff will be available for helping with your Amilia setup.
I did not get an activation email. What now?
Check your spam or junk folder and search for notifications@amilia.com. If it is not there, email amilia@thejla.org and we will send a new one. Please do not create an account at amilia.com, because that makes a duplicate we cannot merge.
Why do I have to authorize the J to charge my card?
Authorization is what lets your membership renew automatically. Without it we cannot see your saved payment method at all, and you would need to enter your card details for every purchase. Go to Wallet, select your card, and choose J Los Angeles under Authorizations.
Managing your WalletHow do I add my spouse or partner to our account?
This has to be done on a web browser rather than the app. Open Amilia in a browser, select the People tab, choose the family member you want to invite, scroll to Account Actions at the bottom, and click Invite to join family account. They will get an email invitation, and once they accept they can use the app with their own login.
Family accountsDo I have to create another password?
Not necessarily. You can sign in using an existing Google, Facebook, or Microsoft account instead, and Amilia will use that to log you in. If you would rather not keep track of one more password, this is the easier route.
How do I register for a fitness class?
In the app, tap Shop, then J Los Angeles, then JFit. On a browser, click Store. Choose your class, select Register for Drop-in, pick your dates, and check out. You will get a confirmation on screen, plus an email and a calendar invite.
Drop insHow do I cancel a class I registered for?
In the app, tap the Calendar icon, tap the class, then Cancel this event. On a browser, go to your Home tab, open the Calendar, find the class, and click the red Unregister button next to your name.
Cancelling a registrationDo I have to use the app?
No. Everything works on a browser at amilia.com. The app is there if you want it, and it is quicker for checking in, but it is not required.
Using the mobile appCan I still check in without my phone?
Yes. The front desk can check you in by name. The app is faster, but it is never the only way in.
Can I pay for something in installments?
For some programs, yes. Where a payment plan is offered it will appear as an option at checkout.
Payment plansWhere can I see what I have paid?
What happens to my data?
Amilia holds your account information under their own privacy policy, and we only use it to run your membership and registrations.
Amilia's data privacy policyFor anything about your membership, your billing, or a class at the J, we are the fastest answer. Email amilia@thejla.org and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Our Membership staff will be available for Amilia setup and training in-person at the following times:
- Sept 14, 8:30 am - 9 am and 9:30 am - 10 am (Lobby)

Why rates are changing
For several years, membership at J Los Angeles has been priced well below comparable community centers and fitness facilities across Los Angeles. We held our rates there as long as we responsibly could.
This adjustment brings us closer to what it costs to run this building, staff our programs, and keep our doors open to everyone who wants to walk through them. It comes alongside real investment in your experience here, the new system among it.
We looked hard at the alternative, which was reducing what a membership includes. We would rather charge what the membership is worth than ask the people who use this building most to use it less. Nothing in your current membership is going away!
A few things worth knowing
- As a current monthly member, you are not charged the $36 administrative fee that applies to new monthly memberships.
- The activities already included and exclusive to your membership have become fully included, aquatics no longer has an additional cost.

Why rates changed
Why is the J raising rates now?
This is the first change to most of our membership tiers in many years. Our rates have stayed below what comparable centers in Los Angeles charge for a long time, and this brings us closer to the real cost of running our programs and our building. It also comes with more included in membership than before, including Lap Swim, Water Aerobics, and JSplash, which used to carry separate costs.
What am I getting for the increase?
More programming and a better building. We are expanding Baby & Me, JFit, and Arts & Culture offerings. We have installed air conditioning in the gym and improved program rooms throughout the building. And we have moved things that used to be billed separately into membership itself, so there is less to pay for on top of what you already pay.
Is aquatics really included now?
Yes. Lap Swim, Water Aerobics, and JSplash are now included with every membership tier, where they previously carried a separate cost. If you use the pool regularly, that offsets a meaningful part of the change on its own.
Is the gym getting air conditioning?
Yes. Air conditioning has been installed in the gym, along with improvements to program rooms across the building. It is part of the same investment as the programming expansion, not a separate project.
Why do I have to switch platforms and pay more at the same time?
They are two separate projects that happen to land in the same season. Amilia is how you will register, pay, and check in. The rate change is a separate decision about what it costs to run the J. Neither one funds the other.
Understanding your rate
How much more will I be paying?
It depends on your tier. The full chart above shows monthly and annual rates for every membership type. If you would like someone to look up your specific membership and walk through it with you, email membership@thejla.org.
My family membership is doubling. How is that fair?
We are not going to pretend that is a small change. Family memberships were priced well below what they deliver: up to seven people, unlimited Baby & Me, and camp discounts, for less than a single adult membership cost. This brings family tiers closer to what they actually provide, and it comes alongside real growth in Baby & Me, JFit, and Arts & Culture programming, plus aquatics no longer billed separately. None of that makes the number easier to absorb. If this is difficult for your family, we would rather hear from you than lose you. Email membership@thejla.org.
Why did my rate go up only a little when my neighbor's family rate doubled?
Rates were not adjusted by a single across the board percentage. Each tier was brought closer to what it costs to deliver, and some had drifted further than others. Family and Senior Couple memberships had stayed especially low relative to what they include, which is why those increases are larger. Individual Adult monthly rates did not change at all.
I have been a member for years. Am I paying the $36 administrative fee?
No. The $36 administrative fee applies to new memberships only. As a current member you are not charged it.
Is there still a minimum commitment?
No, and this is a real change in your favor. Monthly memberships are now true month to month. The three month minimum commitment that used to apply has ended, so you can change or cancel a monthly membership whenever you need to.
Changing or ending your membership
Can I move to a different membership tier?
You can, and we would rather you had the membership that fits your household than one that does not. Before you decide, it is worth knowing what changes: individual and couple tiers do not include unlimited Baby & Me, JExplorers and JCamp discounts, or coverage for multiple children the way a family membership does. If those no longer matter for your family, a smaller tier may well be the right call. If they still do, a family membership is usually better value. Email membership@thejla.org and we will go through it with you.
What if I want to cancel my membership?
We would rather talk first, and not to talk you out of it but instead to have a chance to make sure you know everything your membership now includes, because a fair amount of it is new since last year. Email membership@thejla.org or speak to anyone at the front desk to review, and if you want to cancel we'll provide the few brief steps to do so.
Is anything being removed from my membership?
No. Everything included in your membership today stays included, and several things that used to cost extra are now part of it.
For families finishing preschool
Now that preschool is over, do we still need a membership?
That depends on what your family wants next. Many families stay because of JExplorers, JCamp, JFit, and the connections they have already built here. Preschool was one part of your membership rather than the whole of it, and your membership does not end when preschool does unless you want it to.
What do we get for the family rate once our child is not in preschool?
Everything included in your membership continues: aquatics, JFit, Arts & Culture, Mindful Mondays, Community Shabbat, and Open and Family Gym, plus discounted JExplorers and JCamp for your child, and unlimited Baby & Me if you have younger children.
Is there a program that continues what preschool started?
Yes. JExplorers and JCamp are the natural next steps for school age children, both discounted for members, and our Arts & Culture programming is growing as another option. It is not the same room, but it is the same community.
What programs do you have for older kids?
JExplorers, JCamp, growing Arts & Culture programming, and JFit as children get older.
